Assisted Living Facility Employee Sentenced to Life in Prison for Smothering Elderly Woman

A former assisted living facility employee has been sentenced to life in prison after she murdered an 82-year-old resident who she had been stealing checks from. The elderly resident was found dead in her shower at the facility in November 2011.

According to police, they had been called to the facility the day before the murder because the resident reported someone had stolen her checks. The resident told police that she had printed out four of her checks and they did not match her signature and had been made out to an assisted living facility employee. According to the report, the four checks totaled $1,280.

The employee was suspended from her job at the facility. The next day, the former employee got a fellow worker to let her in the facility allowing her to kill the resident by smothering her. Prosecutors say after killing the resident, the woman put a shower cap on the victim's head and put her in the shower with the water running.

The resident was found by the nursing staff around 6:30 a.m. According to her family, her body was badly bruised. The family of the elderly woman sued the assisted living facility following the incident. For more, read the story.
