Certified Nursing Assistant Charged With Elder Abuse After Hitting Dementia Patient

Police have arrested a nursing home employee who is accused of slapping a dementia patient who recently had brain surgery in the head. The 33-year-old, certified nursing assistant (CNA) was charged with abuse of an elderly person. The elderly victim is a patient who suffers from dementia and Parkinson's disease. Due to these medical conditions, the patient is unable to control the use of his arms and legs and is either in bed or a wheelchair.

The police report states that last week the resident began flailing his arms and legs and trying to stand up.  The CNA pushed him back into his wheelchair and hit him in the back of the head with an open hand.  The police report also states that the abuse was witnessed by an unidentified witness. When the CNA admitted to the incident, she told police she was frustrated with the man because he would not sit still.
