Elderly Man Found Dead After Wandering From Assisted Living Facility

A man who wandered away from an assisted living center on Sunday, June 5th was found dead the next day in a small pasture. Police noted that it is unclear how the 62-year-old resident died. Monday morning the police had issued a Silver Alert for the missing resident, indicating that he had a cognitive impairment and required medication.

A state Highway Patrol helicopter spotted the man's body in the pasture around 10:30 a.m. About 50 police and rescue personnel were involved in the search. It is believed that the man walked out of the assisted living center on his own.The assisted living center was a facility that allowed residents to come and go as they pleased, and some often walk to local stores, said an attorney for the facility.

Despite the fact that the facility is not a locked facility, in December 2009 an investigation into a complaint found that two-thirds of residents were not receiving adequate supervision during the night. For more, read the story.
