Elderly Man in Coma After Being Brutally Attacked by His Roommate

A brutal attack inside a State Mental Hospital Wednesday night left an elderly patient in poor condition after a series of violent incidents at the troubled facility. The beating occurred just days after a staff member was attacked by a patient, the latest incident had workers and patients expressing concerns about safety inside the hospital.

Witnesses at the facility said the victim, a man in his 60's, was currently in a coma at a local hospital. A 31-year-old patient was booked into County Jail for assault with a deadly weapon and battery after patients alleged that he attacked the elderly man who was one of his roommates.

Sources inside the hospital said the attack happened in the unit that holds the most acute and highly dangerous mental patients. A former nurse on the unit said that more police officers are needed inside the unit. On October 23, 2010 a patient killed psychiatric technician Donna Gross at the hospital. Gross, 54, died of asphyxiation after she was attacked in an enclosed courtyard at the hospital.

Another hospital employee, 60-year-old rehabilitation therapist George Anderson, was attacked at the hospital on Dec. 11, 2010. He was hospitalized for treatment of fractures and was released. A 24-year-old patient was charged with battery and was found mentally incompetent to stand trial. The attacks at the facility prompted employees to call for more safety measures and increased staffing at the 138-acre facility capable of housing well over 1,000 patients.
