Elderly Nursing Home Resident Dies After Being Left in Bathroom Without Assistance

State regulators have said that a nursing home nurse is to blame in the case of a resident who was left unattended in his bathroom, then fell and broke his hip while trying to return to bed. The patient died soon after the fall. A state investigative report said the nurse assisted the resident to the bathroom one evening.

Instead of staying with the resident, who had a history of falls, she gave him a call light went to assist another employee. Another staff member witnessed the resident's fall as he was attempting to get back to his bed.  The nurse told investigators that she was not aware that the resident's care plan required staff to remain in his room when he used the bathroom.
