Elderly Woman is Found Deceased on Hospital Roof After Wandering Away

The family of an 89-year-old dementia patient has reached a settlement with the hospital that was caring for her at the time of her death. The woman died in December 2008 after wandering from her hospital room. She was found later, dead on the roof, wearing only a hospital gown and slippers after temperatures had fallen to less than twenty degrees that night. An investigation uncovered that she wandered up to the roof through a service door that was unlocked.

The woman had been transferred to the hospital from a nursing home, which notified the hospital that she was known to wander.  The state cited the hospital for failing to take proper steps to address the woman's wandering behavior and for allowing access to the roof through a door with a broken lock.
