Hired Caregiver Arrested After Woman With Cerebral Palsy Died With Severe Pressure Ulcers

A personal caregiver was arrested and charged this week with neglect of a dependent person after a woman he was hired to care for died with severe bed sores (also known as pressure sores, pressure ulcers, decubitus sores, and decubitus ulcers). The injuries were discovered after the caregiver called to report the 53-year-old woman was having difficulty breathing and was possibly having a heart attack.

Police say an ambulance responded to the caregiver's home and transported the patient to the hospital where she died the same day. Staff at the hospital contacted police after seeing that the woman had severe sores on her back, abdomen, and buttock. According to police, one of the sores went almost all of the way to the bone. Upon the man's arrest, police learned that he had been hired to care for the woman, who had cerebral palsy, through a care agency nearly ten years ago. For more, read the story.
