Lynchburg Man to Face Grand Jury on Charges That He Neglected His Elderly Mother

The following story was first published by the Lynchburg News and Advance:

A felony charge of abuse and neglect of an incapacitated adult filed against Alexander Mikhail, 32, was certified to the grand jury Tuesday afternoon after the court heard descriptions of the filthy home where they found Mikhail's neglected mother.

The charge was filed after Lynchburg paramedics were called to Mikhail’s home in January and found his mother, 74-year-old Shirley Mikhail, covered in feces and very ill. Mikhail was transported to Lynchburg General Hospital, where she died the following day.

Lynchburg paramedic's testified that the man told the paramedics that he had been unable to change his mother’s diaper for three or four days due to back problems. April Rasmussen, a forensic nurse examiner at Lynchburg General Hospital, testified that she found multiple pressure ulcers (bed sores) across her body.

Det. John Pelletier, of the Lynchburg Police Department, testified he was dispatched to Hook Drive to photograph the living conditions in the house after a search warrant was obtained. Pelletier testified garbage bags were piled outside the residence, and inside he found cleaning supplies. Some of the rooms appeared to have been straightened a bit but were not clean. In the room where Shirley Mikhail was found there were two mattresses pushed together. Both had what appeared to be freshly purchased sheets but underneath, one of the mattresses had a large stain that seeped through the top mattress, though the box spring and onto the floor. The case will be heard by a Lynchburg grand jury. For more, read the story.
