Medicare Lists Virginia Nursing Homes with Overall Below Average Ratings (Pt. 2)

Medicare recently launched a new Five-Star Quality Rating System for all nursing homes in the United States.  The Five-Star Quality Rating System was created to help consumers, their families, and caregivers compare nursing homes more easily and identify areas about which more information might be helpful.  This is Part Two of an eight-part series that identifies nursing homes that rated the worst and below-average in several different categories.   

Medicare's nursing home ratings were based on several sources of information: health inspection, nursing home staffing, and quality measures.  One to five stars were awarded in each of these three categories.  Stars were also awarded in a category for overall performance, which represents a combination of the health inspection rating, the staffing rating, and the quality measures rating.  The more stars a nursing home received, the higher its rating.  Five stars represented the highest rating, and one star represented the lowest rating.  

In overall ratings, 57 Virginia nursing homes received two stars, which represents a "below average" rating:
