Morphine Overdoses Suspected in Deaths of Six Nursing Home Patients

Investigators are exhuming bodies to determine if morphine overdoses contributed to the deaths of six elderly nursing home patients.  Hair and tissue samples were obtained and sent to a private laboratory for testing.  According to the patients' death certificates, all died from natural causes ranging from pneumonia to heart disease.

A former employee of the nursing home apparently tipped off the authorities that morphine might have been the cause of the deaths.  The nursing home dismissed the investigation as unnecessary, claimed its staff did nothing wrong, and described the former employee as merely "disgruntled."  Read more about the suspected overdoses.  No charges have been filed yet, but law enforcement stressed the investigation is ongoing, so stay tuned . . .
