Nursing Home Rates Among The Worst For Overprescribing Anti-psychotic Drugs

One state ranked 47th in the nation for overprescribing anti-psychotic drugs to dementia patients. The state not only falls in the ranks with the worst of the worst for these drug prescriptions, but also raised the percentage of anti-psychotic drugs prescribed while other states dropped 17%. Concern is rising with the statistics for this state.

The concern relates to the fact that the death risk is higher for dementia patients taking these drugs. “It really is a joint effort that needs to happen between facilities staffing adequately training their staff and the state holding them accountable for what they’re not already doing,” said one advocate for elder care.
