Pets on Wheels Celebrates 25 Years of Providing Nursing Home Companionship

Pets on Wheels, Inc. a nonprofit organization in Northern Virginia that allows owners of dogs, cats and rabbits to visit residents of nursing homes and assisted living facilities will be celebrating its 25-year anniversary this year.

Pets in consideration for the program undergo several scenarios measuring their obedience to their owners, reactions to moving wheelchairs, and multiple strangers petting them simultaneously. According to a spokeswoman, the organization currently has between 250 to 300 volunteers that visit 14 facilities. The program has proven to be rewarding to both the elderly residents and the animals and their owners who participate. Volunteers who visit facilities do so on their own time and they do not need to adhere to any particular schedule. For more, read the story
