State Lawmakers Propose Bill To Increase Fines For Nursing Homes Over-prescribing Anti-psychotic Medications

State legislature is focused on a bill to increase fines and impact the bottom line of nursing homes. The bill addresses the over-prescription of antipsychotic drugs. Nursing homes are abusing the patients by prescribing medications unnecessarily or beyond the actual need and then billing Medicare and Medicaid for the treatment of the patients.

Lawmakers want to triple the fines in order to crack down on the behavior. The assumption is that if it hurts the wallet of the nursing homes, then they will be less likely to continue since they believe that is the motivation for the over-prescriptions. For more, read the story.
