A nursing home was ordered to bring in restaurant food after state health officials discovered several serious food safety violations.
The state suspended the food permit of the nursing home for the day on Tuesday, requiring residents to receive restaurant food.
A routine survey by the bureau revealed a 16-foot hole in the ceiling that could have contaminated the dishwashing area with leaking water; chicken, beef and other perishable foods stored at unsafe temperatures; soiled and contaminated food contact surfaces; a malfunctioning dishwasher and an overall inability of the center's staff to safely prepare food, officials said.
A bureau surveyor stayed at the center after uncovering the food safety concerns, a spokeswoman said. Meals from licensed restaurants were served at noon.
Within hours, staff repaired the hole and fixed other deficiencies. The bureau reinstated the food permit by the end of the day. For more, read the story.
