Two Nursing Home Aides To Stand Trial On Elderly Abuse Charges

Two women are set to stand trial on unrelated charges that they abused elderly patients in their care.

One of the caregivers, a 27-year-old nursing home aide is set to go on trial for allegedly abusing a 98-year-old woman in her care in July 2008. The other caregiver is a 21-year-old aide who is charged with abuse of an elderly person stemming from a July 16 attack on a 76-year-old woman at an assisted living facility.

The local police department arrested the first woman in July after an investigation revealed the bruises on a patient in her care were signs of abuse, officers said.

According to a police report, the certified nursing assistant told officers she was trying to stop the patient from trying to bite her. She also said the patient spit on her.

The report describes the victim as having bruises, a bite mark on her hand, scratches on her forehead and two bruised eyes.

Two days after the reported attack, Daniels was fired, according to the nursing home.

Authorities say the second woman pinched and punched a 76-year-old woman in the stomach and arms multiple times in July. A sheriff's report states that at the time of the attack, she had worked at the center for about three months.

The report indicates that the victim struck the aide in the stomach while she was trying to dress her. A witness told deputies that the aide got upset, then hit the victim.

“How do you like it?” she reportedly yelled at the victim. “How does that feel?” The aide's lawyer denied that his client struck the victim. For more, read the story.
