Virginia Home Care Nurse Sentenced to Jail For Abuse of Elderly Dementia Patient

A home health care provider has been sentenced to more than a year in jail for mistreating a 93-year-old dementia patient in her care. A judge sentenced the Virginia Beach nurse last month after video footage in court showed the woman punching, slapping and taunting her elderly patient. She received 18 months in jail.

The nurse was indicted in July 2011 on charges of abuse or neglect of an incapacitated adult. She later pleaded no contest to the charges. the nurse was the caregiver for the victim for roughly five years. The family of the victim installed hidden cameras when they felt suspicious about the care provided. Footage from the camera revealed the woman twisting the victims arm and pulling her hair.
